Listening to the pastor screaming morality at his congregation this Republic Day morning, made me wonder if we still need religion to tell us not to be bad.

When a building is being constructed it needs a scaffolding to hold it up. But once it is built the scaffolding can be removed. Do we, as a species, still need the religious scaffolding to tell us right from wrong? Have we not yet grown up? Would we really steal and kill if the religious books didn’t tell us not to?

Perhaps there are those people that still need constant fear in order to force them to be good? Their goodness then is surely suspect. But for us, we have the inner discipline and discernment to know how to live.

So the pastor should turn down the volume on his PA system and talk to those who feel they need it.
